This view from an airliner coming into land is a familiar sight in these latter days predicted by the prophet Daniel (12:4): “Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased”.

But as we fly into a city at night, and gaze in wonder at the carpet of lights beneath, what do we see? Do we marvel at the beauty of man’s creativity, or the millions of people those glittering flashes represent? Or do we see lamps growing ever dimmer in the homes of the lost?

Do we see harvest fields?

The vision for a newsmagazine on your phone is based on the words of Jesus in John 4:35: “Say not ye, There are yet four months, and then cometh harvest? Behold, I say unto you, Lift up your eyes, and look on the fields; for they are white already to harvest.”

Often, the reason we don’t do more for God is that we don’t see the need. With harvest daily, we will “lift up our eyes” and see the great work of our Independent Baptist missionaries, and co-laborers around the world.

Stories that inspire

Can stories about missionaries really inspire people to do more for the cause of the gospel? Let’s test the theory:

  • When news of David Livingstone’s work in Africa was published around the world, hundreds and then thousands of missionaries poured into the continent
  • When Nate Saint and his four companions were speared to death by natives on a beach in Ecuador, the field was opened up to the gospel, with many saved, including Nate’s murderer. His son Steve forgave the man, and went to live in the jungle with him for a time, to learn the ways of the tribespeople. (The other four were Jim Elliot, from Oregon, Edward McCully, Milwaukee, Peter Fleming, Seattle, Roger Youderian, Michigan.)
  • When Rick Martin, with previously no intention of becoming a missionary, heard a dying man speak at missions conference, he turned to his wife Becky and said, “We’re going to the Philippines” and today, more than 300 churches have been planted through his ministry.

We are living in the most exciting time in history, with the world’s population heading toward nine billion. The Millennial generation is the biggest and wealthiest group of the four generations concurrently in the workforce—an even larger demographic than the Boomers who were responsible for the last great wave of prosperity.

And God has given us the technology to reach almost everyone, everywhere, in realtime. We believe these stories in harvest daily will inspire more of us to do more, as we labor to redeem the time.
